About WWCH

Club Objectives
The objectives of the Club shall be to promote woodworking by providing an educational forum for the exchange of ideas to help members and the public learn and improve woodworking skills and techniques, and to promote safer woodworking habits and conditions.  This education takes place at Club meetings as well as community outreach programs.  The Club also creates woodworking items, primarily toys for children, and donates these to other charitable organizations.

Club History
A telephone call to Shopsmith by Bill Beggs in 1983 yielded seven woodworkers in the Houston area who shared similar interests. This group of eight formed the nucleus of what would later be called the Woodworkers’ Club of Houston. The first meeting took place in the home of Mr. Beggs. Subsequent meetings were held in member homes, warehouses, and businesses where they often endured heat, humidity and mosquitos in summer, cold temps in winter, and loud background shop noise. In January of 1990, the meeting date and location settled in on the second Saturday of the month at the Bayland Community Center. The Club met there until January, 2024 when the Club moved the meeting location to the Fellowship Hall of St. Stephen’s UMC. As the membership grew, Club members would craft toys for sale at local malls, donating the proceeds to local charities. One year, the Club donated $7,000 to the Make A Wish Foundation. The tradition of sharing an interest in woodworking and contributing to the Houston area community has carried on to the Club we know today.
